What are the chances of a child being born with a physical or mental learning disability?

Can you answer agonyaunt86’s question about Disabilities?:
I know that the chances of a child being born with down syndrome increase dramatically if the mother is over 35 - but what other factors can contribute to a child being born with a physical disability (cerebral palsy) or learning disability (autism)?

Disabilities Feedback: Noone can give you an exact percentage chance. Obviously if you have a family history of any of these disorders, your chances increase. But unless its a genetic disorder that doctors are able to test for (i.e., have identified the gene that causes it), and you and your partner are both tested - then they can give you a pretty good idea of what your odds are. But something like autism? Your guess is as good as anyone’s.
Disabilities Feedback: Being a preemie greatly increase the chances. The docs said my son would likely have cerebral palsy due to bilateral interventracal (sp?) grade 3 hemmorages (from being born so early), praise the Lord he doesn’t. They also said just being early is a precursor to other conditions such as autism, adhd, mental retardation, ect. Other than being a preemie, I’m not really sure what else can “cause” a disability, if they even know. Good question.
Disabilities Feedback: FYI the chances for a Down’S child is not increased as “dramatically” as you seem to think. Yes as a woman ages the chances are increased with each generation she ages but that doesn’t mean every child born of older mother’s are going to have the congenital disease. There are all sorts of contributing factors to congenital annomalities. Alcohol plays a major part, drugs…street, otc, even prescribed.
I know several women who had children over the age of 35 and their kids are happy, healthy and intelligent. I know one woman who had a child at 50, no problems with the child, happy, healthy normally active 5 almost 6 year old.
Disabilities Feedback: Cerebral palsy isn’t something that happens in the womb, it something that happens during a difficult birth or shortly after from brain bleeds, usually in preemies. I have two preemies and one has special needs, but it wasn’t do to the fact that he was a preemie. What my 3 yr old has is genetic, hubby and I’s genes don’t match up and caused it (from what we are told)…My oldest has autism. My youngest (8months) is on a sleep apnea monitor due to his heart rate drops…Its really hard to say what causes anything, although I wouldn’t change a thing in any of my kids
