Can you answer Sharon V’s question about Disabilities?:
my son is 16 and in the 11th grade. he doesn,t want to be seperated from all his friends in school just because he has problems with stairs at school.the school however wants to keep him on the bottom floor to take all his class when they could just put handicap accessibility in the school so he could take all his normal class, but they refuse to do so.

Disabilities Feedback: What would you have them do? Build an elevator? Build more classrooms on the ground floor? What exactly is your question? They apparently gave him a schedule that was entirely on one floor. If they have a 2 story building, some of the other students have to use the second floor…
Disabilities Feedback: It depends. Are they putting him in a 9th grade English class where the teacher has to take special time to teach him? Or is he in class by himself? Are there classes (like photo or something) he can’t take because they are not on the first floor? It sounds like the school is trying to accommodate him without spending too much money. I understand this, most school districts have to fight for every penny. Maybe you could do some research and see if there are any grants out there to help the school district with the costs of an elevator for your son. What it comes down to is, are they compromising his education or just his ability to have friends in class? Also, you may want to talk to the school and see if they would allow, say, 2 friends in each class with him so he’s not so lonely. If all else fails, contact the ACLU and see what they say.
